In 2022, Sun Pictures will release the espionage action comedy Beast, which Nelson will have written and directed. Ankur Vikal, Pooja Hegde, Selvaraghavan, and Vijay are the film's stars. The plot of the movie centres on an ex-RAW agent's mission to free hostages that terrorists had taken hostage in a mall.
Early in January 2020, Sun Pictures bought the production rights to Vijay's 65th movie in which he plays the lead role. The movie, provisionally named Thalapathy 65, was going to be written and directed by AR Murugadoss. However, after Murugadoss refused to reduce his compensation, the producers fired him from the movie in October 2020. A fresh script for the movie was written by Nelson once he was later hired.
The movie began principal photography in April 2021, with an official announcement made in December 2020, and it was finished that December. The majority of the movie was filmed on a specially constructed set that resembled a retail mall in Chennai, with irregular sessions also taking place in Delhi and Georgia. Anirudh wrote the soundtrack, Manoj Paramahamsa handled the cinematography, R. Nirmal handled the editing, and D. R. K. Kiran oversaw the production design.
On April 13, 2022, Beast was released in theatres. Critics gave the movie mixed reviews, praising the cast performances, the action sequences, the cinematography, the production design, the soundtrack, the background score, and Nelson's direction while criticising the pacing, predictability, and inconsistent narrative. One of the highest-grossing Tamil films of all time, as well as one of the highest-grossing Indian films during the COVID-19 pandemic, the movie made between 236.90 and 250.05 crore globally.
PLOT
A Kashmir-based RAW agent named Veera Raghavan (Vijay) has been tasked with apprehending terrorist Umar Farooq. While doing so, he accidentally kills a child he knew when he fired a missile to stop Farooq from escaping because one of his team members misunderstood what he was doing. Veera leaves RAW when the incident traumatises her. Veera has PTSD and is still dealing with the impact of the child's death 11 months later. At a wedding, he meets Preethi, and over time, he falls in love with her. They dance and have fun together, but Veera punches a man after the father, unaware that he was only playing with his child, threw his child into the air and caught him.
Preethi is taken aback and inquires about his condition. He responds by explaining his earlier error and how it led to his current behaviour. Preethi is impressed and persuades him to work for Dominic & Soldiers, a security firm run by Dominic Irudhayaraj. Meanwhile, news of a significant terrorist strike planned for Chennai reaches the Tamil Nadu administration. Along with Preethi and Irudhayaraj, Veera goes to the East Coast mall, their agency's final client, where he notices unusual activity and concludes that someone else has assumed control of the mall.
The mall is taken over by militants in Santa Claus costumes. Inside a closed restaurant, Veera, Preethi, and a few other people manage to remain unharmed. The terrorists demand the release of Farooq, and the government, commanded by Veera's former associate Althaf Hussain, tries to negotiate with them. Veera is also stranded within the shopping centre, and Althaf is able to make touch with him. Veera is urged to assist them by Althaf. Veera, who was initially dubious, becomes convinced after learning that the terrorists are in the area to get Farooq.
He kills one of the terrorists who is attempting to kidnap the mother-to-be and her daughter, arrests a second terrorist while still alive, and brings him to their hiding place. Veera is successful in infiltrating the terrorists, and she kills some of them. The Home Minister, who is working with the terrorists, arranges for them to fake his wife and daughter Aparna's execution on live television while they are both inside the mall.
In response, Veera kidnaps Aparna and her mother while posing as a Bangladeshi militant to confuse the terrorists and threatens to kill them if Farooq is released. The government eventually caves and releases Farooq. The terrorists' leader and Farooq's brother, Umar Saif, realises he will soon be defeated and appears to give up before slipping into the throng and posing as a captive. Dominic and his assistants are forced to surrender and be captured by Saif after discovering Veera's true identity as a result of Dominic's error and ignorance. Veera escapes with the aid of Aparna, kills Saif and the terrorists, and sees to it that the captives are freed.
Saif is killed by Veera, and the Home Minister is detained for his association with the terrorists. Farooq was freed in the midst of the negotiations. After a protracted air chase with the Pakistan Air Force, Veera locates and captures him in PoK a month later. He then successfully brings him back to India where he is jailed. Weeks later, Veera, Preethi, and the rest of his group gather in Goa to celebrate their antics.

Production
Development
After working with Sun Pictures on Vettaikaran (2009), Sura (2010), and Sarkar, Vijay reportedly signed up for his next film in January 2020, when Master (2021) was being made (2018). [6] [7] In March 2020, the film was initially expected to be directed by Magizh Thirumeni,[8] S. Shankar,[9] Sudha Kongara,[10], Pandiraj,[11], R. Ajay Gnanamuthu, and Vetrimaaran. However, a source claimed that AR Murugadoss had intended to direct Vijay in the film, tentatively titled Thalapathy 65 (Vijay's 65th film as lead actor). [13] It was stated that the project would start production by the end of April 2020, but this did not occur. [14] S. In May 2020, it was decided that Thaman would write the music for the film. This would have been his first time working with Vijay. [15] After 10 years since Sura, Tamannaah was asked to work with Vijay as the lead actress in August 2020. [16] Vijay reportedly played two roles in the script. [17]
Murugadoss gave Vijay the final draught of the script to read early in August 2020. The cast announced that Thalapathy 65 would soon begin production after gaining his blessing in the middle of August 2020[19], with an official announcement scheduled for Ganesh Chaturthi (22 August 2020), which did not occur. [20] In an interview, Murugadoss asserted that the script was entirely fresh and not a continuation of any of his prior films. [21] Further additions to the team included the stunt choreographer team Anbariv, who were working with Vijay for the first time[22], and screenwriter R. Selvaraj, who joined the production in August 2020. [23] Manoj Paramahamsa was introduced as the director of photography in September 2020. [24]
As compensation for the project, Vijay was initially expected to get 100 crore, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic's financial impact, he decided to forego 30% of his pay and instead received 70 crore. [25] After the failure of Murugadoss's previous film, Darbar, Maran asked that Murugadoss lower his compensation (2020). [26] Sun Pictures, however, fired Murugadoss from the project in October 2020 when he rebuffed their requests. [27] [28] Later, the filmmakers intended to hire either S. J. Suryah, Nelson, or Magizh Thirumeni to helm the film, but Nelson was pushed upon by composer Anirudh, who collaborated with Vijay in Master. [29] [30]
Pre-production
Nelson will helm Thalapathy 65, Sun Pictures revealed on December 10th,[32] Additionally, Anirudh was added to the production to provide the music; this is his third project with Vijay and Nelson following their respective movies, Kaththi (2014), Kolamaavu Kokila (2018), and Doctor (2021). [35] Manoj and Anbariv, who were a part of the movie Murugadoss and Vijay were planning to make, were kept on for this one. [36] It was revealed that R. Nirmal, who collaborated with Nelson on Kolamaavu Kokila and Doctor, would be the movie's editor. D. R. K. Kiran would be in charge of the production design. [37] According to Anbariv, the movie will have "amazing" stunt sequences like those in K.G.F: Chapter 1. (2018). [38]
As the final draught of the script was being written, Nelson had been working concurrently on the movie's script and Doctor's post-production tasks. [39] He started researching locations for the movie during that time, and he also posted a few photos from Russia to his Instagram account. [40] According to reports, Vijay plays a "funny and sharp" role. [41] The movie was first titled Thalapathy 65, but on June 21, 2021,[42][43], the day before Vijay's birthday, the title Beast was revealed. [44]
The major narrative was revealed in a Diwali edition of the magazine Ananda Vikatan released in November 2021. It involved an invasion that took place in a mall, where terrorists held a number of people hostage, and how the protagonist was able to free them. [45] [46] The mall is where most of the events are held. While mostly an action movie, the movie also has some black humour and synchronised humorous characters, which are typically found in the director's movies. [47] [48] Nelson acknowledged Pokkiri (2007) as an influence on the movie and defined Beast as "60% action and 40% comedy." [49]
Casting
Veera Raghavan, a RAW agent, is portrayed by Vijay. Nelson compared him to John Wick and James Bond, respectively, in [50]. [49] Pooja Hegde was mentioned as the lead actress in January 2021,[51] and she hinted at her involvement in an interview in February 2021. [52] On March 24, 2021, Sun Pictures officially endorsed her induction. [53] Ten years after her screen debut in Mugamoodi, the movie marks her return to Tamil cinema (2012). [54] Beast received a 50-day time slot from Hegde,[55] and she was paid 3.5 crore. [56] The crew dismissed rumours that they were going to cast a second female lead after they surfaced[57]. claiming that the movie didn't have place for more prominent actors and that the script didn't call for it. [58] According to Hegde, the movie successfully combines Vijay's acting style and Nelson's directing technique. [59] Hedge, who had just seen the success of the Telugu movie Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo, was chosen by Nelson because she could match Vijay's height (2020). [60]
After attending the premiere ceremony, VTV Ganesh and Kavin were revealed to be cast members in March 2021. [61] Kavin denied being a cast member; but, three months later, he claimed to be an assistant director. [63] Aparna Das, a Malayalam actress, announced her participation in the production in April. [64] Shine Tom Chacko, a Malayalam actor, was approached in May 2021 about playing a significant role in the movie and making his Tamil debut. [65] [66] Yogi Babu said in June that he will be participating in the project, making this their sixth time working together following Velayudham (2011), Mersal (2017), Sarkar (2018), and Bigil (2019). [67] August 7, 2021 Selvaraghavan would play a character in the movie, according to Sun Pictures. [68] On the same day, Lilliput and Ankur Ajit Vikal were also revealed as cast members. Sathish Krishnan, a choreographer and actor, joined the cast of the movie during the second schedule. Three adversaries are said to have appeared in the movie [72]. [73] On August 25, unnamed parts for Smruthi, Janani Durga, Madhuri Watts, and Hasini Pavithra were cast. [74] Ananda Vikatan announced on October 1 that Shaji Chen would have a significant part in the movie. [75] Sujatha Babu, a television reporter for Sun News, was said to play the role of Vijay's mother in the movie in mid-October. [76] In the same month, Redin Kingsley, a frequent in Nelson's movies, joined. [77] Nelson revealed a behind-the-scenes still on November 28th, confirming the contributions of musician Bjorn Surrao, All three of them participated in the director's previous film Doctor, including Sunil Reddy and Shiva Arvind. Filming
An audition for Thalapathy 65 was held on February 10, 2021, in the Chennai headquarters of Sun TV Network. [81] A formal puja ceremony was held at Sun TV Studios on March 31, 2021, to introduce the movie. Due to her busy schedule, Hegde was not present during the launch. [84] After the 2021 election for the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly,[85][86] Vijay and Nelson left for Georgia to begin filming the movie on April 7, 2021. [87] [88][80] On April 9, Sun Pictures announced that the movie had begun production in a post from the set. Due to limitations brought on by the second wave of the pandemic, the team only shot 30% of the movie in Georgia and the remaining 70% in Chennai. [90] On April 26, Vijay returned to Chennai. after 15 days of filming in Georgia[91], when a few action scenes and the entrance song were shot. [92]
The EVP Film City in Chennai recreated a sizable shopping mall for the second schedule because shops in Tamil Nadu were closed due to COVID-19 regulations. [93] Nelson had previously looked for malls in Delhi to shoot in, but finally decided against it due to the challenges of crowd management. [49] Vijay, however, requested that the team halt production due to the increase in COVID-19 instances and the ongoing statewide lockdown in Tamil Nadu. [94] [95] After Hegde was given the COVID-19 diagnosis, the song shoot for the movie, which was set to begin in mid-May 2021, was also postponed. [96] In July 2021[97], production picked back up, and the second schedule was 20 days long. [98] At East Coast Road, a scene was shot. There a sizable set was built and where Valimai was being filmed. [99] According to reports, filming for the movie continued at the Intercontinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort. [100] The crew relocated to Gokulam Studios to film the significant scenes. [101] [102] The third schedule for the movie started on August 2nd, 2021, and lasted for more than three weeks. [103] [104]
The team continued to film the recurring sequences in Gokulam Studios until September 1, 2021,[106][107] after which they planned to shoot a few moments in Delhi as part of the fourth schedule. The entire schedule was finished on August 23, 2021[105]. [108] During the schedule, Jani Master choreographed a song sequence that starred Vijay and Hegde. [109] [110] On September 20, the fourth schedule got underway in Delhi. [111] [112] An action scene choreographed by Anbariv was shot during the course of this schedule for five to seven days. [113] After the 28th of September, the following schedule started in Chennai. [114] According to reports, over 70% of the filming was finished by late October, and the production is expected to be finished by late December. [115]
The plan to film the movie in Russia for the action sequences in the conclusion was later abandoned. [116] [117] Instead, the group chose to return to Georgia for the filming of the last scene, which would include a younger version of Vijay's character. [47] The team would reportedly recreate Kashmir and film scenes with an army backdrop during this schedule. [118] For the Georgia shoot, Manoj Paramahamsa bought a brand-new Tiltamax rig,[119] which also included a hands-on Red Komodo 6K,[118] and later, a RED V-raptor camera was brought in order to film the action sequences in high resolution. [120] Thus, The first Indian movie to use the RED V-raptor camera was Beast. [118] In November 2021, Hegde travelled back to Chennai to begin filming the movie. But despite the fact that none of the cast members were wounded, the sets in Chennai flooded due to the city's severe rainfall. [122] It has also been reported that flooding did not harm the inside of the sets. [122] On December 11, 2021, production came to an end. The movie Beast was presented in theatres on April 13, 2022, at Puthandu. [127] The movie also had dubbed versions in Hindi (named Raw), Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada in addition to Tamil. [128] Red Giant Movies is the owner of the distribution rights for Tamil Nadu. Distributors of the Telugu version include Sri Venkateswara Creations, Suresh Productions, Asian Cinemas, Magic Frames, Dheeraj Enterprises, and UFO Moviez. The Hindi version is released by UFO Moviez. [133] The rights for worldwide distribution are held by Ayngaran International, with the exception of Singapore and the Gulf, where Home Screen Entertainment has those rights. [134] In Kuwait and Qatar, the movie was outlawed. although no official justification was given. [135] [136] A dispute between Karur theatre owners and distributors over the estimated price for the movie prevented Beast from opening in the Karur district of Tamil Nadu. [137]
