K.G.F: Chapter 1 is a 2018 Indian period action movie in the Kannada language[5] that was written and directed by Prashanth Neel and was made by Vijay Kiragandur under the Hombale Films banner. It is the first of the series' two parts, with K.G.F: Chapter 2 coming next. Yash plays Rocky in the movie, and Ramachandra Raju, making his acting debut, plays Garuda. The movie's narration is provided by Anant Nag, with supporting performances by Srinidhi Shetty, Vasishta N. Simha, Achyuth Kumar, and Malavika Avinash. It was the most costly Kannada film at the time of its release, with a budget of 800 million rupees (approximately to 910 million or US$11 million in 2020). [2] Rocky, a prominent assassin in Mumbai who was born into poverty, is the main character of the movie. He assumes the identity of a slave-laborer in the Narachi limestone mine (Kolar Gold Fields) in order to assassinate Garuda, the future heir of Kolar Gold Fields, when his employer's boss offers him complete control of Mumbai.

Neel finished writing the screenplay in early 2015, at which point the movie's production got under way. [6] Two years later, in January 2017, filming started. The majority of the movie was shot in locations like Kolar, Mysore, and areas of North Karnataka and is set in the Kolar Gold Fields. The movie's development was finished in August 2018. [7] Srikanth Gowda edited the movie, while Bhuvan Gowda was in charge of the photography. The movie's music was composed by Ravi Basrur. [8]

K.G.F: Chapter 1 was first released in Kannada on December 20, 2018, and Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Hindi dubs followed the next day. [9] The movie garnered mixed reviews from reviewers, but it did well at the box office, earning 2.5 billion (equivalent to 2.8 billion or US$36 million in 2020) during its full theatrical run and going on to become the highest-grossing Kannada movie. It also became a cult favourite. [10] The movie took home two prizes at the 66th National Film Awards for Best Action and Best Special Effects. [11] The movie garnered two wins from five nominations at the 66th Filmfare Awards South, including Best Film and Best Actor for Yash.

PLOT

El Dorado, a book by journalist Anand Ingalagi that chronicled the occurrences at the Kolar Gold Fields (K.G.F.) between 1951 and 2018, was outlawed by the Indian government; yet, a television news channel managed to obtain a copy and conduct an interview with him.

In southern Mysore State, where Raja Rocky Krishnappa Bairya was born on the same day to a destitute teenage woman named Shanti, gold mine was discovered by government officers in 1951. A powerful crime lord named Suryavardhan, who was with the official, has them slain and secretly starts K.G.F. while leasing the land for 99 years to be used for the Narachi limestone mine. He had five associates: Andrews, Rajendra Desai, Kamal, the son of previous Suryavardhan colleague Bhargav, who manages the shipping of purified gold bars, who supervises the smuggling of gold throughout the country's western coast; Guru Pandian, the leader of the governing DYSS party; and Adheera, Suryavardhan's sibling who oversaw K.G.F. security. Due to his immobility, Suryavardhan names his older son Garuda as the K.G.F.'s future heir. Adheera makes a failed attempt to kill Garuda, contrary to what Suryavardhan had anticipated she would do as his son's helper. Adheera's automobile is afterwards bombed by Garuda, and his death is assumed. Former allies of Suryavardhan are now interested in K.G.F.'s wealth.

Rocky, who is 10 years old, moves to Bombay in search of wealth and power as directed by Shanti. He starts working for Shetty, a gold smuggler and Andrews's subordinate, who faces off against Dubai-based adversary Inayat Khalil. Years later, he advances through the ranks and is in charge of coordinating the delivery of African gold bars to the Bombay shore. As Shetty's influence grows, so does that of Rocky. When Andrews learns about Rocky, he offers him Bombay in exchange for killing Garuda. Rocky takes the job and travels to Bangalore where, much to the dismay of Reena's fiancee Kamal, he meets her and falls in love with her. Rocky then pursues Reena to accept him. An unveiling of a statue is planned to tempt Garuda away from K.G.F.

yet even before it starts, the attempt is stopped. Rocky sees the control Garuda has over people and situations. As he has no other choice except to kill Garuda, Rocky travels to K.G.F. and kills a group of Garuda's goons to gain entry. The forcibly abducted employees of K.G.F. are exposed to cruel treatment and are treated like slaves. Rocky joins them and, despite being first indifferent, is moved by the guard's ruthless execution of a mother and boy. Rocky sneaks into the maintenance room during a roll call and quietly accesses the mine map. Rocky nearly escapes death when a fellow slave gives his life to rescue the lives of his wife and pregnant child. Due to incomplete information about the incident, Andrews, Kamal, and Desai believe Rocky has been killed.

In order to save a blind slave the guards were about to mercilessly murder, Rocky gets into a fight with the entire unit of 23 guards, murdering everyone of them. With this deed, Rocky becomes a saviour in the eyes of the slaves. In order to inform Andrews and his men that he is still alive, he directs them to burn the guards' bodies. Their informants are Kulkarni and Virat, the younger brother of Garuda. Garuda gets ready to leave his house in order to look into the fire and the missing guards. Virat chokes Suryavardhan to death to stop this, and Garuda quickly returns home. In order to kill his father's allies as soon as the ritual is finished, Garuda asks Maa Kaali's ceremony to be moved from the following week to the following day. He is shaken by the recent unfortunate turn of events. As Vanaram learns that the third prisoner has already been slain in his prison cell, Rocky sneaks down a tunnel at night to the location where Garuda has chosen to behead three slaves as sacrifices to the goddess. Garuda arrives and sacrifices the first two victims, but Rocky, who had been the third captive, is hidden and kills him.

Ingalagi draws the conclusion that Rocky deliberately picked KGF as the site of Garuda's murder in order to assist him wrest control of an army of slaves, and he also suggests that this is just the beginning. A no-nonsense politician named Ramika Sen learns of Garuda's murder. Adheera, who is genuinely alive, as well as Khalil, intend to reappear. Vanaram gives his forces the order to attack Rocky and his army as the movie comes to a close.

Production

Pre-production

After Mr. and Mrs. Ramachari (2014) was a hit, Yash signed on for four projects as of March 2015, one of which was with filmmaker Prashanth Neel (of Ugramm fame). [16] The film KGF, which tells the story of an ambitious man and his life in the 1970s, was regarded as one of the most expensive productions in Sandalwood. The project was funded by Hombale Films, the Vijay Kiragandur-led production company. According to Karthik Gowda, one of its production executives, "KGF, which is set in the 1970s, took over one and a half years of pre-production because they wanted to ensure they got every single detail right, be it the matchboxes, telephone, or the clothes people wore," they wanted to make sure they got every single detail right. [18] The movie's creator, According to Prashanth Neel, the movie will premiere in April 2016 and production will start in May 2016. [18] The music for the film was composed by Ravi Basrur, who had previously worked on the director's film Ugramm, and the cinematography was handled by Bhuvan Gowda.

As the plot is told in a non-linear fashion, Prashanth Neel said in an interview with The Times of India that he intended to divide the movie into two parts. The film's potential for economic success played a role in the decision to divide it into two parts. It made logical for us to release it in two parts because of the project's enormous breadth and the inclusion of beginning, middle, and finish points for each section. Regarding the choice to release it in many languages, He claims that it was because the movie has a timeless topic and a novel premise. [19] He said that KGF was intended to be a Kannada movie in response to rumours that it was going to be made as a "Tamil version, with Suriya being pulled in, but failing to do so." [20]

Prasanth Neel refuted rumours of a third episode in the KGF franchise in December 2020 while filming its second part, asserting that the plot would be wrapped up in that instalment. [21]

Development

There is a large cast in the movie, most of them are unrecognisable. Given the subject and environment of the movie, the actors all had gruff appearances. For his character as Rocky, a sleek and elegant figure of the 1970s, Yash donned a beard and long hair. [22] Miss Supranational 2016 winner Srinidhi Shetty, a model living in Bangalore, was cast alongside Yash. [23] Self-described Yash fan Srinidhi claimed to have seen his flicks Drama and Mr. and Mrs. Ramachari and said that he is one of the performers she looks forward to seeing. [24] Vasishta Simha was cast in a key role in the movie in August 2017[25], while Ramya Krishnan and Nassar were wrongly claimed to be in it. [26]

The film crew began a 15-day schedule in North Karnataka in July 2016 without Yash because he was busy filming for Santhu Straight Forward (2016). A sizable set, which required more than 35 to 40 days to build, served as the location for the movie's first schedule. [27] Due to issues surrounding the Kalasa Banduri controversy, the film's scheduled release date was delayed, forcing the production team to change its original shoot schedule. Yash's decision to take a hiatus from filming in order to concentrate on his marriage to Radhika Pandit, which took place in Bangalore in December 2016, added to the schedule's difficulty. [28]

Filming

The final parts of pre-production were completed, and on January 15, 2017,[29] the movie's filming got underway. [30] To recreate Kolar in the 1970s and 1980s, the filmmakers built sizable sets at Badami on January 25, 2017, which allowed them to shoot a lot of scenes there. [31] The Kolar Gold Fields film set from the 1980s was reconstructed by the art director Shivakumar, and VFX was employed as an addition for the movie. [32] Producer Kirangadur got insurance coverage for the cast and crew of Masti Gudi (2017) after learning that a freak accident occurred on the set of the movie that killed two actors. [33] The project was half finished as of June 25, 2017, and filming had resumed following the reconstruction of sets that had been destroyed by torrential rain. [34] [35]

The Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion, which is situated on the University of Mysore campus, was painted as part of the movie's shooting. A few scenes from the film, which stars Yash and Srinidhi Shetty in the key roles, were also filmed at the campus' adjacent centennial clock tower. [36] Yash began working on the movie's final schedule in April 2018. [37] One of the key moments in the movie's plot, the interview sequence, was filmed in May 2018 with actresses Malavika Avinash and Anant Nag. [38] Yash had declared towards the end of the month that he had finished his parts and had begun dubbing for the movie. With the exception of one song, the filmmakers had finished most of the movie as of May 2018. [39]

According to reports, Kajal Aggarwal will make her Kannada debut in August 2018 when she reportedly shoots a song sequence. [40] Nevertheless, Tamannaah had her second film debut in Kannada on August 9 when she was engaged for a song number[41], following Jaguar (2016). [42] Although another song shoot for the Hindi version of the movie, featuring Yash and Mouni Roy,[44] took place at the Goregaon Studio on December 7 and 8, the directors claimed on August 17 that filming had concluded. [45]

Themes and influences

In a conversation on the movie's topic with director Prashanth Neel for The Times of India, he said "KGF, a song about greed and gold, has a strong gold feel. KGF is similar to El Dorado in many ways. The way that throughout history, monarchs and armies have searched for the fabled El Dorado, where anyone with a claim to the location dominated the globe. Anant Nag, the movie's narrator, also mentions this. [46] Prashant clarifies the movie's 1970s–1980s setting by saying, "Due of the Cold War between the USA and the former Soviet Union, which had an impact on countries like Iran and Afghanistan, in 1978, The greatest increase in gold prices ever recorded occurred. There has never been a time when the price of gold has risen so dramatically. Therefore, 1978 was the ideal year for us because human greed increases as gold prices rise. [46] The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly and For a Few Dollars More were two other action and western movies[47] that served as inspiration for the movie. [48]

Music

[61] To advertise the Telugu version of the movie, the producers held a pre-release event at the JRC Convention Center in Hyderabad on December 9. As the main guest, S. S. Rajamouli attended the celebration. [62] In order to promote the movie, Mobi2Fun Private Limited released KGF, a specially created online game for Android mobile devices, on the Google Play Store. KGF received over 5,000 downloads within hours of its original release. [63]

[88][89]

Lawsuit

Following two petitions filed by Venkatesh G, Yogesh, and Ratan alleging plagiarism and accusing the filmmakers of portraying Kolar's history in a negative light, the 10th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court in Bengaluru issued an interim stay before the film's release on December 20, 2018.
[90] Producer Kiragandur, however, insisted that the movie will indeed be released on that day and urged viewers to disregard rumours. [91] The presentations in Australia were cancelled due to an unlawful screening, the filmmakers said in a statement on December 27, 2018, since the distributors of the movie failed to contact the original film's creators.
