RRR (film) is an upcoming epic action drama film in the Telugu language from India that was written and co-directed by S. S. Rajamouli and V. Vijayendra Prasad. D. V. V. Danayya of DVV Entertainment produced it. N. T. Rama Rao Jr., Ram Charan, Alia Bhatt, Shriya Saran, Samuthirakani, Ray Stevenson, Alison Doody, and Olivia Morris are among the actors who appear in the movie. Two real-life Indian revolutionaries, Alluri Sitarama Raju (Charan) and Komaram Bheem (Rama Rao), and their struggle against the British Raj are the subject of this fictitious tale. The story, which is set in 1920, focuses on the unrecorded period of their lives when both revolutionaries decided to live in obscurity before waging war for their nation.

Rajamouli read accounts of Rama Raju and Bheem's lives and drew connections between them, speculating on what may have happened if they had crossed paths and became friends. The film was formally announced in March 2018. Due to delays brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, principal photography for the movie didn't finish until August 2021. It started in Hyderabad in November 2018. With a few scenes in Ukraine and Bulgaria, the movie was primarily shot in India. M. M. Keeravani composed the soundtrack and background music for the movie, which was shot by K. K. Senthil Kumar and edited by A. Sreekar Prasad. The production designer for the movie is Sabu Cyril, and V. Srinivas Mohan oversaw the visual effects.

RRR, which cost 550 crore rupees ($72 million), is the most costly Indian movie ever made. The movie's initial release date in theatres was set for July 30, 2020, however it was repeatedly delayed because of the pandemic and production issues. On March 25, 2022, RRR was released in theatres. The film received great reviews from critics who praised Rajamouli's direction and writing as well as the performances, particularly those of Rama Rao and Charan. RRR smashed the record for the greatest opening-day collection by an Indian movie with 240 crore (US$30 million) worldwide on its first day. RRR outperformed Rajamouli's previous picture Baahubali 2 in terms of box office revenue in its native market of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, garnering over 415 crore (US$52 million). [6] The film broke multiple box office records for an Indian production, including the third-highest grossing Indian film, with a worldwide gross of 1,150-1,200 crore (US$150-160 million). At the 47th Saturn Awards, RRR is up for three nominations, including Best Action/Adventure Film, Best International Film, and Best Director.

Plot

A young Gond girl named Malli who has artistic aptitude is taken captive by dictatorial administrator Scott Buxton and his cruel wife Catherine in a forest in Adilabad in 1920, when the British Raj was still in effect. The tribe's protector Komaram Bheem, furious at the deed, sets off for Delhi under the appearance of a Muslim man named Akhtar with the intention of rescuing her. The Nizamate of Hyderabad, who supports the Raj, alerts Scott's office about the threat elsewhere. Catherine doesn't let it stop her and asks A to help. Rama Raju, a driven officer with the Indian Imperial Police, will neutralise the danger.

As they begin their new duty, Raju and his uncle Venkateswarulu go to a number of pro-independence events in search of leads. His opinions attract the attention of Lachhu, Bheem's gullible aide. Falling for Raju's trickery, he attempts to induct him into Bheem's plot, only to flee when he discovers his true identity. A short while later, both Bheem and Raju encounter each other; unaware of their opposing identities and intentions, they unite to save a boy from a train wreck, sparking a friendship between the two.

The two become closer as time passes. Raju then helps Bheem court Jenny, Scott's niece, without knowing that he is trying to break into Scott's house. Bheem learns Malli is being held captive there while attending a party at Jenny's request, and he makes a promise to release her. In the meantime, Raju discovers Lachhu's secret identity and whereabouts, whereupon he captures him. Lachhu provokes a banded krait to attack Raju while questioning him; he then informs Raju of his impending doom and that the remedy is only known to the Gonds. Raju, who is confused, approaches Bheem, who tends to him right away. Raju determines Lachhu's genuine motivations after observing Lachhu and Bheem's shared religious characteristics.

Regardless, Bheem reveals his tribal origin and his purpose while being ignorant of Raju's secret identity. When Scott is being honoured, Bheem's men break into his home with a lorry loaded with exotic animals, causing chaos among the gathered guests. Bheem is momentarily able to fight after the animals attack Scott's guards, but when Raju shows up and tells him that Scott plans to kill Malli, he must give up because of his duty.

Raju is given a promotion after the incident for stopping Bheem, but he feels guilty about what he did because of his own pro-nationalistic past and his true identity as a police mole. When Bheem is publicly flogged, Raju tries to convince him to change his mind about what he did, but the latter decides to be flogged instead. Bheem sings with defiance while battling his wounds, inspiring the assembled throng to rebel. Raju is made even more aware of the recklessness of his conduct by the riot. Desperate to save his friend, he convinces Scott to kill Bheem in secret while setting up an ambush to do so; however, Scott figures out his scheme. Raju is seriously hurt while managing to save Malli from Scott's soldiers.

Raju's actions are misinterpreted by Bheem, who had simultaneously managed to free himself, as an attempt to kill Malli. As a result, he beats Raju before fleeing with her. Months later, Bheem, who had fled with Malli to Hathras, is apprehended by colonial officials. Sita, Raju's fiancée, fends them off by using an endemic smallpox outbreak as an excuse.

She divulges Raju's true anti-colonial goals while being unaware of Bheem's identity. She also informs them of Raju's approaching execution. Bheem makes a promise to save him after being crestfallen by his own foolishness. Bheem sneaks into the barracks where Raju is being held and frees him with the aid of a sympathetic Jenny, raising the suspicion of other troops in the process. After defeating them, the couple makes their way to a woodland nearby, where they utilise a longbow they stole from a Ram shrine to massacre more soldiers. The two throw a blazing motorcycle into the barracks' magazines, setting them on fire while they turn the fight against Scott. The subsequent explosion kills many within Scott's company, including Catherine. Finally circling a wounded Scott, Raju orders Bheem to shoot him with an English gun, achieving their shared goal. They later reunite with Sita and Jenny after robbing a stash of Scott's weapons.

Production \sDevelopment

S. S. Rajamouli revealed two projects with producers D. V. V. Danayya of DVV Entertainment and K. L. Narayana in an interview with Variety published in October 2017. Rajamouli prioritised the former project, which was expected to be a social drama movie and would be followed by Narayana's movie with Mahesh Babu as the lead actor. [7] Through his social media accounts, Rajamouli posted a photo with N. T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan in November 2017, alluding to the actors' appearance in the movie. [8]

The movie was given the working title RRR, which stands for Rajamouli, Ram Charan, and Rama Rao, in March 2018[9]. [10] The tentative title RRR was later confirmed as the official title of the movie because Rajamouli believed that a title that could be used in all languages was necessary for a picture of this scope. [11] [12] The initial story for the movie was provided by Rajamouli's father, V. Vijayendra Prasad, and Rajamouli wrote the script after spending six months on it. [13] In September 2018, writer Sai Madhav Burra was hired to write the dialogue for the movie in Telugu,[14] whereas Madhan Karky (Tamil),[15] Varadaraj Chikkaballapura (Kannada),[16] Mamkombu Gopalakrishnan (Malayalam),[17] and Riya Mukherjee wrote the dialogue for the other translations (Hindi). [18] Rajamouli kept a number of the technicians from his earlier jobs.

The cast also includes Rama Rajamouli as the costume designer, Sabu Cyril as the production designer, K. K. Senthil Kumar as the director of photography, A. Sreekar Prasad as the film editor, and V. Srinivas Mohan as the visual effects supervisor. [19] The choreography for the film's climactic action moments was done by stunt director Nick Powell. [20] Both Rama Rao and Charan had attended a special workshop in mid-November 2018 to prepare physically and intensely for their roles in the movie before the start of filming. [21] [22]

Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem, two real-life Indian revolutionaries who battled against the British Raj and the Nizam of Hyderabad, respectively, are included in the wholly fictitious narrative RRR. Rama Rao portrays Komaram Bheem, while Charan plays Rama Raju. The story focuses on their time in Delhi in the 1920s before they start fighting for their nation. According to Rajamouli, there was a connection between the two Telugu tribal leaders and the events that occurred around them .[24]

It was fascinating to learn that Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem's stories are similar when I read about them. They were never acquainted. Why couldn't they have met? What if they had been motivated by one another? RRR is all about it. It is all made up. The film is presented in an enormous format. For it, we had to conduct a tonne of research. To understand their clothing, dialect, and way of life, which is why it took us so long to put this together.

S. S. Rajamouli [25]

The Motorcycle Diaries (2004) is where the film's central idea originated, Rajamouli stated in March 2019. He claimed that he was interested by how a character named Che evolves into a revolutionary named Guevara and that he based his heroes' personalities on this idea. Rajamouli stated at a press conference in Chennai in December 2021, "One of the biggest influences on my films, particularly RRR, is Inglorious Basterds. The movie's portrayal of Hitler's death as a huge surprise left me completely astonished." [26] [27]

Casting

Rajamouli finalised the cast in March 2019. Ajay Devgn and Alia Bhatt make their Telugu debuts in the movie. [28] [29] [30] Bhatt was cast opposite Charan in the role of Sita, while Devgn would have an extended cameo. [31] Tamil actor Samuthirakani was brought on to play a pivotal role. [30] British actress Daisy Edgar-Jones was signed to be paired opposite Rama Rao, but she left the project in April 2019 The film's young actors included Chakri, Varun Buddhadev, and Spandan Chaturvedi. The primary antagonist Scott was played by Thor actor Ray Stevenson, while Lady Scott was played by Alison Doody .[34]

Rama Rao claimed in an interview with Deadline Hollywood that they had done extensive research before portraying their characters on TV. The Hans India reported in March 2019 that Devgn will appear in the second half of the movie during the flashback episodes.[36] According to reports, Keerthy Suresh and Priyamani were approached for a role in the movie,[37][38] before Shriya Saran confirmed her role opposite Devgn in June 2020.[39] Rahul Ramakrishna,[40] Chatrapathi Sekhar,[41] and Rajeev Kana .[42]

Following the passing of Sushant Singh Rajput in June 2020, Bhatt was subjected to online trolling where she was charged of nepotism. A few supporters also called for Bhatt to be replaced in RRR. [43] [44] Bhatt, who joined the production in December 2020, rejected the rumours that she would be leaving the movie and being replaced by Priyanka Chopra[45]. [46] For the movie, she picked up Telugu language. [47] [48]

Design

RRR's production designer was Sabu Cyril. Before the first shooting schedule, the crew built a set at a Hyderabad-based aluminium factory for filming an action scene. [49] [50] A manduva house was built for the actors and crew. [51] The Aluminium factory set designed was regarded as the main filming location where the first schedule of the film's shooting was held. [49] In June 2020, it was designated as a national historic landmark. [46], where the group had completed a rigorous action schedule that lasted 50 days and including night shots. [53] The art direction team also built a sizable set for a song shoot starring Charan and Bhatt. [54] It was claimed that the song replicated the 1920s and had a historical element. [Reference needed] The promotional music video for the movie "Dosti" was shot in July 2021 on a specially built set at the Annapurna Studios, which Sabu Cyril created and Dinesh Krishnan took the photos for. Post-production

Concurrent with the completion of filming and the start of post-production, the movie was made. Rama Rao and Charan were the first to start the dubbing process in April 2020, doing so from the comfort of their own homes for their respective roles in the movie. [102] [103] For each other's introduction teases, both actors provided voiceovers. [104] [105] The film's creators announced that both actors have finished the dubbing process in June 2021. [106] Filming was finished on August 26, 2021, and a protracted post-production phase began. [107] Due to upcoming obligations, increased production expenses, and filming delays brought on by COVID-19 regulations, Rajamouli decided to spend less time in post-production than he did with his earlier films, despite the fact that he had already invested three years in the project. The dubbing process was finished by the end of October 2021[109]. Rama Rao and Charan each dubbed their lines for the movie in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, and Kannada .[110]

Along with Framestore and the film's primary visual effects firm, the Moving Picture Company (MPC), Srinivas Mohan is the visual effects supervisor. [111] NY VFX company Alzahra Some of the additional visual effects in the movie were created by Waala, Redefine, Knack Studios, Makuta VFX, Digital Domain, Rhythm and Hues Studios, Method Studios, Rodeo FX, Technicolor VFX, Legend3D, The Third Floor, Inc, Clear Angle Studios, Halon Entertainment, 4DMax, and Cinesite, among others. Mohan talked about the use of pre-visualization, gammage (definition needed), lidar scanning, and light stage technologies in the movie during an interview. [112] During the post-production phase, extensive visual effects work took place for more than six months. [13]

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) received the final cut of the movie on November 30, 2021, and on December 9, 2021, the censor board issued the movie a U/A certificate with a final runtime of 187 minutes .[114]

Mistakes in the past

The portrayal of Komaram Bheem[b] as a "noble savage" whom a civilised Rama Raju teaches about injustice in the movie, according to Akash Poyum, a researcher from the Gond community[124] writing for The Caravan, contradicts historical evidence. He believed that the scene in which Rama Raju presents Bheem with a white flag bearing the message "Jal, Jangal, Zameen" is representative of how the movie appropriates Gond symbolism. He mentioned that the slogan is credited to Bheem and that the Austrian ethnologist Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf described Bheem as "an erudite young man able to read and write." He added that the spirit Bheemal Pen is the source of the name Bheem among the Gond community. [126]

British historian Robert Tombs critiqued the movie's historical inaccuracies in its portrayal of the British Raj, which is emphasised as cruel oppressors, in an article for The Spectator (especially that of Governor Buxton and his wife). According to him, "RRR panders to the reactionary and violent Hindu nationalism that is becoming dominant in Indian culture and politics and is being fuelled by the Modi government." [127] The article quickly gained popularity on social media, where many Indian users criticised it for being a denial of the Raj's crimes. [128] Shawnee State University history professor Lavanya Vemsani, Then on Twitter, scriptwriter Aniruddha Guha slammed the article. Rajamouli has previously stated that there are no historical facts in his film, only imagination, while Pooja Pillai of The Indian Express disagreed, saying that "[d]emanding that a mass entertainer also be historically correct is a fool's game." [129]

Music

Older cousin and frequent associate of Rajamouli M. The score and soundtrack for the movie were written by M. Keeravani.[130] Lahari Music and T-Series acquired the audio rights to the movie for 25 crore (US$3.1 million), which was a record price for a South Indian album.[131] Lahari Music distributed the soundtrack in all of the South Indian languages, while T-Series promoted the Hindi soundtrack .[132] Seven of Keeravani's original songs, including "Dosti," "Naatu Naatu," "Janani," "Komuram Bheemudo," "Raamam Raaghavam," "Etthara Jenda," and "Komma Uyyala," are included on the soundtrack. Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry, Chandrabose, Keeravaani, Suddala Ashok Teja, K. Shiva Dutta, and Ramajogayya Sastry are responsible for the lyrics .[133]

Theatrical

RRR was initially slated to be theatrically released on July 30, 2020,[204] but in February 2020[205] the release date was changed to January 8, 2021, a week before the Sankranthi festival (14 January 2021).[206][207] Because of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, which caused production disruption, the film's special premieres were postponed until March 24 before its worldwide theatrical release on March 25,[202][203]. blaming the second wave of COVID-19 and its effects as the reason for theatrical limitations anywhere in the world.[212][213]

Prior to the Sankranthi holiday, on January 7, 2022, the theatrical release date was modified in early October 2021. A week prior to the film's release, the producers made the announcement that the release will be put on hold indefinitely due to the rise of COVID-19 cases brought on by the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron strain. [215] [216] Two potential release dates—March 18, 2022, and April 28, 2022—were announced in the middle of January, depending on the pandemic situation. [217] [218] Later, the filmmakers decided on March 25, 2022, as the premiere date. [219] The movie was planned for Telugu distribution alongside dubs in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and other Indian and foreign languages in 2D, 3D, and IMAX formats. [220] [221] The movie is being released in Dolby Cinema for the first time ever in India. [222]

A public interest litigation (PIL) was filed in January 2022 at the Telangana High Court to prevent the release of the movie on the grounds that it misrepresents the historical figures Alluri Sita Rama Raju and Komaram Bheem. [223] The petition was dismissed by the High Court in March when it was determined that the video did not damage the character of two revolutionaries as stated. [224]

The chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, raised ticket rates in Andhra Pradesh in the middle of March 2022 in response to political and film industry opposition after lowering ticket costs the previous year.[225]

[226] The creators gained government authority to raise ticket prices by 75 rupees (94 US dollars) for the first ten days following the movie's 25 March release, according to Cinematography Minister Perni Venkataramaiah. [227] The movie is slated for a 21 October 2022 Japanese language release. [228]
